Stockholm Taverners Cricket Club

Social cricket in Stockholm, Sweden

We are Taverners

We're a small group of (mainly) middle agred amateur cricketers based in Stockholm, Sweden. Founded in 2014.

Stockholm Taverners were established in 2014, but for many years before that we had been a Stockholm affiliate of Guttsta Wicked CC with a number of our founding members having played cricket with Guttsta for a number of years. Paul Eade, effectively our chairman, was club captain for Guttsta for many years.

We all enjoy our cricket and take it seriously but not too seriously. All of the Taverners have migrated to Sweden from other (cricket playing) parts of the world. Our experience varies from school cricket to minor counties to the Swedish league. We include Englishmen, an Irishman, a Kiwi, an Austrailian, a South African, Indians and a Hong Kongese!

You can read more about our activities and exploits on our Pitchero club site where we publish news about Stockholm Taverners. Click on News to have a look.

Training indoor and outdoor

We practice all year round with normally just a few short breaks in January, April and July. We play matches mainly in the later part of the season, during August and September.

Indoor cricket

From October through to March Taverners gather each Thursday at what we call the Farsta BCCE - The Farsta Brandstation Centre of Cricketing Excellence. This is a small sports hall that we have a long standing booking for. We have currently relocated our indoor sessions to Brännkyrka as Farsta is being rennovated.Indoors, we usually play our own specially developed form of indoor cricket.

Outdoor sessions

From April to September we practice outdoors. Most often this is at Södermalms Skolan, but we also practice occasionally at the cricket nets at Skarpnäck and a few other spaces.

Last Man Stands matches

Stockholm Taverners take part in Last Man Stands here in Stockholm. We normally play a few LMS friendly matches each season as well as take part in the Autumn Cup.Stockholm Taverners on Last Man Stands. We play in green and black shirts with black trousers. A render of our team shirts can be seen here and is available to buy from our LMS team shop.

Pub nights

Every week, usually after training, there is a Taverners social event where a few Taverners gather to have a few pints of real ale. These gatherings are held at Oliver Twist on Södermalm.

Play cricket with Stockholm Taverners

We are always open to new social cricketers joining Taverners. So if you love cricket, quite like a chat over a beer (or alcohol free alternative) and fancy having some friendly training sessions and matches then get in touch!

Taverners Indoor Cricket rules

There are three levels – ‘First XI’, ‘Second XI’ and ‘Third XI’.Third XI:You can only be dismissed ‘conventionally’ – bowled, caught, etc., though there is an ‘automatic’ wicketkeeper. However, at this level you get a ‘life’ for the first wicketkeeper dismissal in your innings OR first in the current session (that is, it is re-set both for every new innings and every new week).Second XI:As above except you can be caught off the first rebound off either side wall. Also, you don’t get a ‘life’.First XI:As above except you can also be out caught if you hit the ball directly onto certain parts of the wooden surround (at Farsta Fire Station).Run scoring:Directly onto far wall (bowler’s end) if it has touched the ground 6, directly onto far wall without touching the ground 4, through the door 4, two side walls 3, side and far wall 3, side and back wall 2, back or side wall only 1.LBW: To be lbw the batter has to be plumb in front and the batter accepts this (walks). For this the batter gets 5 runs deducted from their current innings (they aren’t dismissed) and the bowler earns 5 runs.

Promotion / staying at a level:To be promoted to a higher level you must achieve one of the following:Score a hundredScore two fifties within four inningsTake four wickets within four oversTo stay at a level (2nd or 1st, you can’t drop below 3rd) you must score at least one 50 within six innings.Declaring:A batter can declare their innings closed at any time they choose. If having done this they have earned the right to be promoted to a higher level, this automatically happens for their next innings.Bowling points:A bowler earns 5 runs to be added to their current innings for every wicket they take. This includes lbw and where the batter survives with a ‘life’.
